The Story Behind NetworkMonitor

Why we built the most trusted network monitor for macOS and why protecting your digital life in 2026 has never been more important.

The Beginning

In 2006, when most people were still using dial-up and the concept of "apps phoning home" was barely on anyone's radar, we created NetworkMonitor with a simple but radical idea: Mac users deserve to know exactly what their computer is doing on the internet.

Back then, outbound firewalls were almost unheard of. Apple’s built-in firewall only controlled incoming connections. Everything leaving your Mac was invisible. We saw this as a fundamental flaw in how people understood their own devices.

"We didn't build NetworkMonitor to sell software. We built it because we were tired of watching our own Macs send data to servers we never approved — and we knew millions of other users felt the same way."

— The NetworkMonitor Team, 2006

Why We Exist in 2026

Twenty years later, the situation has only become more urgent. Modern applications — from creative tools to productivity suites — maintain dozens of persistent connections. Many of them send telemetry, usage statistics, and sometimes sensitive data to third parties without clear consent.

The average Mac in 2026 makes over 1,200 outbound connections per hour across all applications. Most users have no idea this is happening. This is not a technical problem anymore — it is a privacy crisis.

The Internet We Are Fighting For

We believe the internet should remain a tool that serves people, not the other way around. Every time an application secretly phones home, every time a tracker follows you across sites, every time your data is sold without your knowledge — the open, trustworthy internet we all rely on becomes a little smaller.

NetworkMonitor exists to push back against that erosion of trust. Not through fear, but through visibility and control. When you can see what your Mac is doing, you can make informed decisions. When you have control, you regain power over your digital life.

Our Mission

We are not just developers. We are advocates for a better internet. Our mission is simple:

This is why every article on this blog, every guide, and every update to NetworkMonitor is created with one goal in mind: to help you understand and protect what matters most — your digital freedom.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

Our Core Values

Transparency First

We show you everything. No hidden connections. No black boxes. If it happens on your Mac, you will see it.

User Empowerment

We don’t believe in "set and forget" security. We believe in giving you the knowledge and tools to stay in control.

Respect for Privacy

We practice what we preach. NetworkMonitor itself never phones home. Your data stays yours — always.
